Los argentinos celebramos el Día del Abogado el 29 de agosto, por haber nacido en esta fecha, en 1810, Juan Bautista Alberdi.
Resulta curioso, sin embargo, saber que Alberdi nunca ejerció la profesión de letrado en nuestro país. Completó exitosamente sus estudios de Abogacía en la Universidad pero nunca juró, ya que en ese momento el gobierno de Juan Manuel de Rosas imponía un juramento de fidelidad al régimen federal, como requisito para la habilitación profesional.
Alberdi, que había sufrido como periodista el cierre del inofensivo periódico La Moda, no quiso aceptar otra humillación y prefirió marchar al destierro.
Vivió muchos años en Montevideo, donde trabajó en un diario y revalidó su diploma de abogado viviendo de sus honorarios.
Al producirse el sitio de Montevideo por las tropas rosistas, Juan Bautista viajó a Europa y luego se radicó en Valparaíso. Había llegado a Chile con sus últimos ahorros y ejerció el periodismo para sustentarse, pero al poco tiempo se dedicó intensamente a la abogacía.
Su talento lo hizo distinguirse en el foro y llegó a ser el profesional mejor remunerado de la ciudad. Cuando Urquiza derrotó en Caseros a Rosas, Alberdi escribió Bases y Puntos de Partida para la Reorganización Institucional; proponía – a pesar de su amor por la Abogacía- dejar a un lado la instrucción humanística, para acentuar la formación de artesanos
Sostenía fervientemente, a pesar de su inmenso amor por su profesión:
"No necesitamos abogados, sino técnicos…"
Su vida y amor por la Patria lo lleva a París, en principio como embajador y luego como exiliado político
A punto de cumplir 70 años, Alberdi regresó a su patria. Había pasado 41 años en el extranjero, aunque siempre escribiendo sobre su país. En la Facultad de Derecho de Buenos Aires pronunció una conferencia: La omnipotencia del Estado es la negación de la libertad individual.
Aunque nunca ejerció la profesión en su país, nos dejó a los abogados una gran lección: defendió la paz y el sistema republicano, aun al costo de sufrir en carne propia el destierro y las persecuciones.
Alberdi es solo un ejemplo más de abogados que defienden lo que creen justo con pasión y con amor

When defeated Urquiza Caseros Rosas, Alberdi wrote Bases and Starting Points for institutional reorganization; intended "despite his love for the Bar a put aside the humanistic education, to emphasize the training of craftsmen
Argued strongly, despite his immense love for his profession:
"We do not need lawyers, but technicians ..."
His life and love of country leads him to Paris, first as ambassador and then as a political exile
On the verge of his 70th birthday, Alberdi returned to their homeland. He had spent 41 years abroad, but always writing about their country. In the Faculty of Law at Buenos Aires gave a lecture: The omnipotence of the state is the negation of individual freedom.
